SNORING: comic sound effect or warning signal? PDF  | Print |  E-mail

About twenty-five years ago I thought I was on the road to fame when Andrea Melly, the famous actress wrote an article about her husband’s snoring. She noted that I had cleverly sorted it out by suggesting he wore a cotton reel sewed into the back of his pyjama top. When he rolled over on his back in his sleep the uncomfortable reel caused him to roll back on his side. The article was universally ignored, and anyway, the problem of snoring is not always as simple as a cotton reel in the pyjamas!

THE EYES HAVE IT: dealing with a common eye irritation PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Growing up as a child in the Deep South of the US where the local population had a healthy suspicion of vaccination, we were often swept by plagues of measles, the ‘Flu, digestive disorders and respiratory complains, but one of the most dreaded was an outbreak of the fabled Pink Eye. “Pink Eye?” I hear you ask incredulously, “what is that?” This nasty contagion appeared regularly and would lay low great swathes of the population, especially school children. The treatment necessitated your being shut up in a stuffy bed room, all curtains closed and pinned up with only a dim night light. Because this malady is so ancient and so widespread, many different and effective cures have been developed. Not every cure is suitable for every patient!

REPETITIVE STRAIN OF THE ELBOW PDF  | Print |  E-mail

This time of year the thoughts of many people naturally turn to that painful and common condition know to the inner circle of the Medical World as cubitum wembeldonousii, or Tennis Elbow. As you are unlikely to be blessed with such a special Physician, your doctor may have called it by the term lateral epicondylitis. This is a descriptive term for pain around the outside of the elbow, the result of ageing, repetitive use and possibly trauma. It affects as many as three percent of the population and only about five percent of patients appearing for treatment are actually tennis players. This brings to mind many frivolous remarks about athlete’s foot!! The term “tennis elbow” was coined because as many a fifty percent of serious tennis players do actually develop the condition.
