MANIPULATIVE THERAPY: All of the manipulative therapies, Chiropractic adjustment, Osteopathy, etc. are attempts to rectify the physical structure of the body to either eliminate pain (back ache, sciatica, for example) or to promote a more positive physical function (improving lung volume in asthma, etc.). These schools of therapy have seen enormous growth and popularity in the UK in the past few decades and are increasingly become a first choice for those suffering from many work related problems such as lumbago and spondylitis.

HOMEOPATHY: This is the oldest and most popular of all forms of complementary treatment in the UK. It has been in constant use by the Royal Family for several generations and is even represented in a sprinkling of NHS hospitals around the country. In many cases it is a safe alternative to drug therapy, and is based on the ancient principal of treating “like with like”. Safe dilutions of active substances (from minerals or living plant or animal sources) are matched against the patient’s over all “Constitution” and symptoms.

BAUNSCHEIDT’S THERAPY AND COUNTER IRRITATION: Throughout the European Continent, clinics exist which exclusively treat rheumatism and arthritis with this time honoured method. It is particularly popular in Germany and Switzerland, but the Natural Therapy Centre is probably the only clinic in the UK where this therapy is carried out by a qualified therapist in its entirety. There are many types of Counter Irritation therapy, ranging from “cupping” (probably the oldest therapy in continual practice since man began treating physical ills) which is remarkable for muscular inflammations, some respiratory problems and whip lash complications to the classical Baunscheidt’s Cure which has an extraordinary effect on arthritic joints.
COUNTER-IRRITATION: Counter-irritation is an ancient therapy with a wide range of uses. It is relatively painless in its application and may be safely used in chronic arthritis and rheumatism to bring long lasting freedom from pain and often to restore joint mobility. It is useful in treating a wide range of respiratory dysfunction such as EMPFYSEMA, ASTHEMA and BRONCHITIS. In its varied forms, counter-irritation is especially useful in improving LOWER and MID-BACK PAIN, SCIATICA AND SPONDYLITIS AND SPONDYLOSIS. It is also especially useful in treating REPETITIVE STRAIN injury. Here in our clinic, we employ basically two traditional forms of counter-irritation: CUPPING and BAUNSCHEIDTS KUR (Baunscheidt’s Cure!)

CUPPING: Cupping is the older form of counter-irritation and takes mainly two forms:Dry Cupping and Wet Cupping. The treatment gets its name from the “cupping glasses” which are used to effect the therapeutic change. A cupping glass is filled with hot air (the patient feels no heat!) and applied to soft tissues (muscles). The contraction of the air in the cupping glass draws the muscles into the glass, thus concentrating not only the tissues themselves but also the local fluids (blood and lymph). The tissues are gently lifted, in itself bringing relief to sciatica and emphysema, etc. and the resulting improvement in circulation causes a local detoxification, often bringing relief to inflammations. When this is the extent of the therapy, it is called “dry cupping”. Usually, however, wet cupping is more useful. In wet cupping, this same procedure is followed by removing the glasses and applying a scarifier to the cupped area. A scarifier is a small set of spring-loaded knives (sounds painful, but it isn’t, in fact it is far less uncomfortable than acupuncture) which lightly scratch the surface of the skin, causing an evacuation of stagnant fluids and matter when the cup is replaced. it is painless and often brings an on-the-spot relief of pain.

BAUNSCHEIDTS KUR: Baunscheidt’s cure is a more recent form of counter-irritation from Germany. It is a more complex treatment which must usually be administered over two days and is especially efficient in treating ARTHRITIS of the ELBOWS, KNEES, WRISTS and ANKLES. It can be applied to the neck and spine as well. It consists of applying especially prepared plasters or oils which cause quantities of lymph to be expressed through the skin, bringing with it the acids which cause joint pain. It causes a degree of discomfort over night as the plaster “draws” the acid, but the relief is usually so great that this slight discomfort is well worth the effort.

If you have any questions about COUNTER-IRRITATION therapy or wish to make an appointment for treatment, please ring this clinic on 0161-795-5113. Remember, Baunscheidt’s therapy requires two treatments within 24 hours, so if you feel that you are interested in this form of treatment, mention it when making your appointment so that proper time will be reserved for you.
